Day Four

The following morning, whether Evelyn joined me or not for breakfast, or whether or not she was well enough to go to the gymnasium, I decided that I was prepared to go without her. I wasn’t going to allow her drunkenness to spoil my day. Having bathed late the night before, I woke up and got dressed without having myself another bath. I made my way into the Third Class dining hall and entered cautiously. I feared having to face Evelyn and Roger after the way they both behaved in the pub.

When I arrived, Evelyn was sitting at a table alone drinking coffee. Her eyes looked sunken and she appeared rather sleepy, but she smiled at me and welcomed me to her table. She stood to greet me and hugged me as I approached her .

“Well, good morning,” I said. “I’m surprised to see you here so early.”

“Why do you say that?” she asked, quizzically. “I’m here every morning aren’t I?”

“You had yourself quite the eventful evening last night,” I said, taking a seat beside her.

“Yes, I know. Please, don’t remind me,” she said.

“Where’s Roger and William?” I asked, curiously.

“William is still at the babysitters. I asked her to please watch him today because both Roger and I were feeling under the weather,” she said.

“That’s nice of her to watch him for you,” I said.

“Yes, she was delighted,” she said. “Her own kids are grown and she doesn’t have grandchildren.”

“Are you feeling any better?” I asked concerned.

“Yes, I think I need to eat something. I woke up with quite the appetite,” she said. “I just got here not even five minutes before you got here. I haven’t even ordered yet.”

“I imagine so,” I said. “You left your dinner all over the floor in the pub.”

“That’s horrible,” she said. “I think I remember that. Did I vomit on you?”

“No, but you just missed me by a few inches. I was standing right in front of you when it happened,” I said. I wasn’t trying to embarrass Evelyn, I just wanted to see if she remembered the events that occurred at the pub the previous night.

“I’m so sorry,” she said. “Remind me never to drink again.”

“I will,” I said. “It’s a bad habit to pick up, especially because it makes people so sick.”

“I know,” she said. “I think I just got caught up in the moment. It seemed fun at the time.”

“Yes, but now you know better,” I said. “Are you up to going back to the gymnasium? It’s open daily for women from nine until noon.”

“I’d like that,” she said. “First, I need to get something to eat. Perhaps it will make me feel better.”

She ordered a large bowl of oatmeal and fresh fruit, but not her usual pile of toast and jam. I ordered a small bowl of fruit and a small bowl of oatmeal. We sipped on our coffee and she laughed about the man whose foot she had stomped on .

“I wonder if he’ll be walking around with a limp today,” she said.
