Day Four
The following morning, whether Evelyn joined me or not for breakfast, or whether or not she was well enough to go to the gymnasium, I decided that I was prepared to go without her. I wasnât going to allow her drunkenness to spoil my day. Having bathed late the night before, I woke up and got dressed without having myself another bath. I made my way into the Third Class dining hall and entered cautiously. I feared having to face Evelyn and Roger after the way they both behaved in the pub.
When I arrived, Evelyn was sitting at a table alone drinking coffee. Her eyes looked sunken and she appeared rather sleepy, but she smiled at me and welcomed me to her table. She stood to greet me and hugged me as I approached her .
âWell, good morning,â I said. âIâm surprised to see you here so early.â
âWhy do you say that?â she asked, quizzically. âIâm here every morning arenât I?â
âYou had yourself quite the eventful evening last night,â I said, taking a seat beside her.
âYes, I know. Please, donât remind me,â she said.
âWhereâs Roger and William?â I asked, curiously.
âWilliam is still at the babysitters. I asked her to please watch him today because both Roger and I were feeling under the weather,â she said.
âThatâs nice of her to watch him for you,â I said.
âYes, she was delighted,â she said. âHer own kids are grown and she doesnât have grandchildren.â
âAre you feeling any better?â I asked concerned.
âYes, I think I need to eat something. I woke up with quite the appetite,â she said. âI just got here not even five minutes before you got here. I havenât even ordered yet.â
âI imagine so,â I said. âYou left your dinner all over the floor in the pub.â
âThatâs horrible,â she said. âI think I remember that. Did I vomit on you?â
âNo, but you just missed me by a few inches. I was standing right in front of you when it happened,â I said. I wasnât trying to embarrass Evelyn, I just wanted to see if she remembered the events that occurred at the pub the previous night.
âIâm so sorry,â she said. âRemind me never to drink again.â
âI will,â I said. âItâs a bad habit to pick up, especially because it makes people so sick.â
âI know,â she said. âI think I just got caught up in the moment. It seemed fun at the time.â
âYes, but now you know better,â I said. âAre you up to going back to the gymnasium? Itâs open daily for women from nine until noon.â
âIâd like that,â she said. âFirst, I need to get something to eat. Perhaps it will make me feel better.â
She ordered a large bowl of oatmeal and fresh fruit, but not her usual pile of toast and jam. I ordered a small bowl of fruit and a small bowl of oatmeal. We sipped on our coffee and she laughed about the man whose foot she had stomped on .
âI wonder if heâll be walking around with a limp today,â she said.
